Ten years ago, who would have thought that social media marketing would be as big of a deal as it is today? Social media is an effective, yet affordable way, to connect, reach out and to inform your customers and prospects about your brand. But do your business pages (I.e. LinkedIn Company Page, Facebook Business Page, etc.) follow the unwritten rules of social media for business? If you follow these simple rules, you will see the steady growth of your pages and new clients before you know it.
1) Invisible Tweets
When you are tagging another person or company in your tweet, you use the “@” symbol. The biggest mistake that tweeters make is starting the tweet with the “@” symbol. Why is this a mistake? When you place “@” before your tweet, it makes the tweet invisible unless your followers are also following the handle that you tagged. An easy fix to this misstep is to add a period before the “@”. By doing this, your tweet will now be visible to your entire audience.
2) Not Using a Photo with Your Facebook Post
Did you know that if you post a picture along with your content, according to a study done by Hubspot, you are 53% more likely to generate likes and 104% more likely to attract comments? When creating your digital marketing strategy for social media, always incorporate photos that will capture the your audiences’ attention. As a side note, always be sure to size your images to 403X403 pixels when uploading with your posts.
3) Less is More
Let’s face it. We live in a day and age where people’s attention spans are very short. Say what you need to say as fast as possible, but still get your message across. There is so much “noise” out there and unless you get someone’s attention right away, you post won’t be read, reposted, retweeted, shared, commented on, etc.
Also, use links to your advantage by creating short messages that entice your customers to click for more information.
4) Avoid Sounding Like a Robot
There is a reason why we get frustrated when we call a company and get pushed through automated prompts. We are people who like to talk to people. This is the reason why social media is such a powerful tool. However, it is easy to sound too “salesy” with your tweets or posts.
Adding a personal touch to your social media messaging is key to standing out from your competitors. A good way to do this is to introduce your moderators and community managers on your About page or on your company profile. Also, have the people that are posting your messages add a tag at the end of their posts. This will add a personal touch and allow you, as a business owner, to track your posts.
