Do you have a bank of newsworthy content ready to share with your target audience? Are you looking for a new way to leverage your content online? There’s good news; on August 4, 2014, Google announced a new tool targeted at news publishers that will give them the “keys to the kingdom.” I recently co-presented a webinar entitled “Public Relations is Dead, Long Live Public Relations” with Marc Gutman of WildStory Media on this topic. View the recording to learn how Google highlights relevant press releases in a separate News Section of its search engine results pages (aka SERP’s).
What Benefits Does the Publisher Center Offer for Your Website?
The new Google News Publisher Center is an awesome way for you to give your potential readers a bit more information about the content they are about to consume and your website benefits from better discovery and classification of your news content. In order to keep track of your results, you must have Google Webmaster Tools setup for your site.
Taking advantage of the new Publisher Center requires you to first verify ownership of your website. Simply click the following link and then request inclusion in Google News; it’s a pretty straight forward process.: https://partnerdash.google.com/partnerdash/d/news#p:id=pfehome&a=100095465
According to the official blog post from Google, you can now use the Publisher Center to directly make the following changes:
- Update your news site details, including changing your site name and labeling your publication with any relevant source labels (e.g., “Blog”, “Satire” or “Opinion”)
- Update your section URLs when you change your site structure (e.g., when you add a new section such as http://example.com/2014commonwealthgames or http://example.com/elections2014)
- Label your sections with a specific topic (e.g., “Technology” or “Politics”)
Google’s primary goal of launching the Publisher Center is to offer a platform where news publishers (you) and Google News can work hand-in-hand to provide web browsers, journalists and other news seekers with the most relevant and appropriate news content available on the web. As always, I highly recommend you read the official guidelines before getting started.
