Have you ever wondered what people are searching for on Google? According to Cnet.com, there are over 500 million searches on Google per day. The good news is that Google has a program to track the popularity of each key search term. This program is dubbed, Google Trends. Google Trends has the ability to pinpoint each search term by location, popularity, and related searches. Users have the ability to also compare each term as it relates to a specific subject. On the right is an example of the popularity of 4 major U.S sports; Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
As you can see below, there is a spike in interest during the time each sport is being played throughout the year and a dip in each sports’ off-season.
Interest by Location
Google Trends also allows you to pull data on each search term’s location. Here is an example of where people are searching for the keyword “ Ice Hockey” in the US. When looking at the “Ice Hockey” search term, you can see that most of the queries are coming from the northern states where ice hockey is the most popular. This feature comes in pretty handy when defining where your target audience is potentially located.
So now that you you have a basic understanding of Google Trends, how can this tool benefit a business owner’s search results? The answer is keyword research. The main foundation of search engine optimization is finding the right keywords that directly relate to the products and services that your company offers. When you perform keyword research, using Google Trends, you can see what people are searching for and related keywords within your industry. Once you have these keywords, you can use them to create SEO friendly content for your website.
Once you have established the relevant keywords for your business, you can use Google Trends for content ideas. By using the related keywords feature, you can pull different relevant keywords that people are searching for to use in your website or blog.
One major key factor to remember is, when it comes to SEO, creating relevant and unique content will benefit your audience and your organic search rankings.
