Every local service business owner I talk to wants the same two things. More leads. More sales. So let me start with the numbers that matter, because they are the whole reason this is worth an hour of your attention.
When AI can actually see and crawl your website, the results are not subtle. Local sites that get crawled by AI generate 3.2 times more human traffic, 2.7 times more form submissions, and 2.5 times more click-to-call actions than the sites the AI engines ignore. Those are not vanity metrics. Forms and phone calls are leads. Leads are sales.
On July 30, 2026, I co-presented Duda’s Local AEO 2026 Masterclass with Shawn Davis, who designed the research behind those numbers. This post is the ultimate version of what I shared: exactly what a local service business needs to do to get crawled, cited, and found in AI search, backed by Duda’s analysis of 68 million AI crawler visits.

Here is my complete session, cued to where I start. Watch it, then keep reading for the playbook and the moves you can make this week.

AI is the new front door for local search
Here’s the thing. Most people still start at Google, and they will for a while. Someone types “plumber Boulder Colorado” and off they go. What has changed is what greets them. More and more of those local searches now trigger an AI Overview at the top of the page, and a growing number of people skip the search box entirely and just ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity.
That shift is already showing up in our own numbers. About half of our new leads at Boulder SEO Marketing now come through AI chatbots. And those leads are better, because the person has already done their research and been told, by the AI, to reach out to us. They arrive halfway to a decision.
The reality is that the question is no longer “where do we rank.” The question is “do we exist in the answer.” That is a different way to think about your website, and it changes what you work on.
People love to worry about “near me.” You cannot change where your business physically sits, and you do not need to. What you can influence is relevance and prominence, and those two levers are exactly what the rest of this guide is about.
What 68 million AI crawler visits actually revealed
Shawn Davis and his team at Duda looked at 858,457 published websites against 68.9 million AI crawler visits in a single month, then worked out which sites the AI engines were visiting and what those sites had in common. This is not survey data or opinion. It is crawler-log research at a scale almost nobody else has.
The headline is the one I opened with. Sites that AI crawls generate 3.2 times more human traffic, 2.7 times more form submissions, and 2.5 times more click-to-call actions. Get crawled, and the humans follow.
Here’s what I’ve learned that makes this easy to act on: the same work that makes a site attractive to AI also makes it better for your customers. As Shawn put it during our session, the way you have to write for an AI to understand you happens to be the way that reads clearly for a person too. You are not choosing between optimizing for machines and serving humans. You do both with the same moves.
The five must-haves for local AEO
When the study dug into what the most-crawled local sites had in common, five features carried most of the weight. If you only work on a handful of things, work on these.
1. Connect and sync your Google Business Profile
This was the single biggest lever in the entire study. Sites with the Google Business Profile connected and kept in sync with the website were crawled at a 92.8 percent rate. Claim your profile the right way, keep your name, address, phone number, and hours identical across your site and every directory, and then actually work the dashboard once a month. Respond to every review, and use those responses to naturally work in the service and the location. Upload real photos taken on your phone at the job. Publish Posts, which almost every business ignores, because that is you talking directly to the search engine. Not responding to reviews is the single worst thing you can do here.
2. Get reviews, and make sure they are marked up
Reviews were one of the strongest signals in the data, and it makes sense. Reviews are trust made visible, and both Google and the large language models are looking hard for trust. Ask for them consistently, respond to all of them, and make sure they are marked up with schema so the engines can read them cleanly.
3. Add local schema
Local schema is one of the easiest wins on this list and it moves the needle on its own. It is structured data that spells out your business hours, address, service area, and reviews in a format AI reads instantly. You can have a chatbot generate the markup for you in a couple of minutes, which makes skipping it hard to justify.
4. Publish fresh, expert content on a real blog
Freshness is a lever most local businesses leave on the table. In the study, sites publishing 50 or more blog posts saw up to 33 times more crawler visits than sites with none. The catch is quality. Low-quality, AI-slop content does the opposite of what you want, so this is not about volume for its own sake. It is about publishing genuinely useful content, written by a real expert, on the topics your customers actually search.
5. Build service and location pages
If you are a plumber, you need a page for broken pipes and a page for leaky faucets. If you serve five towns, you need a page for each one. Structured service and location pages are the backbone of local visibility, and the research showed they add crawler visits with every additional page. Even a single-location business benefits from a dedicated location page beyond the homepage.
Here is the part that should motivate you. These features stack. Sites with four or more of them were crawled at a 95.9 percent rate, versus roughly 50 percent for sites with none, and pulled about 16 times more crawler visits. In my session I showed a specific combination, a real blog plus local schema plus a synced Google Business Profile plus dynamic service pages, that drove sites to roughly 400 percent more crawler visits. This is not rocket science. It is a game plan, and it is backed by real data.
E-E-A-T is the number one signal
If you take away only one idea from this whole guide, take this one. The most important signal for showing up at the top of Google and in AI search is E-E-A-T, which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.
Here’s why it matters more than any single tactic. Google and the large language models will not surface content they cannot associate with a trusted, vetted source. If they cite spam, people stop trusting them, so they have every reason to check who is behind the content before they put it at the top or quote it in an answer. That is why anything I publish under my own name has a real shot at ranking within 24 to 48 hours for competitive terms. It is not the content alone. It is the content tied to a name the engines already trust.
Most businesses I talk to are terrible at this, and it is the biggest thing holding them back. The fastest ways to start building it: run a press release with a founder quote whenever you hire someone, add a service, or open a location, through an inexpensive service like PRLog. And get your experts quoted in industry roundups through a platform like Connectively. This is the exact approach we use to build our clients’ authority.
Make your site easy, and exciting, for AI to crawl
None of the above works if AI cannot read your site in the first place. Give it a real About page that lists the real people who work at your business, which is itself an E-E-A-T signal against the flood of fake, scammer sites. Add proper policy pages. Keep your hours matching your Google Business Profile and Yelp. If you are not sure what you are missing, ask a chatbot, in the voice of your business type in your area, which competitor pages you need to match and which pages you have not built yet.
Now look a little further ahead. Soon we will all hand tasks to AI agents and let them search on our behalf. I set one up myself recently to track hot tub options against a budget and report back weekly. If your website is not friendly to that agent-to-agent world, you get skipped before a human ever sees you. Tools are already emerging that will grade how agent-ready your site is, and it is worth checking where you stand.
Kill the website bloat
This one is counterintuitive, so stay with me. Google reads your website like a library. If every book on the shelves is excellent, people come back more often. If half the shelves are filled with thin, low-quality, AI-generated filler, the whole library suffers.
We are living this right now with our own site. When I pulled up our Google Search Console and looked at the “crawled, currently not indexed” and “discovered, currently not indexed” buckets, I knew exactly what I was looking at: years of low-quality content dragging us down, where roughly 15 percent of our pages generate about 90 percent of our traffic. So we are cutting the dead weight. Go to the Pages section of your own Search Console, look at those two buckets, and deal with what you find.
The moves to make this week
You do not have to do everything at once. If you did just these, in this order, you would be ahead of almost every competitor in your market:
- Claim and connect your Google Business Profile, then commit to working the dashboard once a month.
- Ask your happiest customers for reviews, and respond to every review you have.
- Add local schema to your site. A chatbot can generate it for you.
- Publish one genuinely useful blog post written by a real expert on your team.
- Fix your About page and make your hours match everywhere.
- Run your business name and your own name through ChatGPT and Perplexity to see what AI already says about you, then fix the gaps.
This is a lot. Here is how we help.
Here’s the honest truth. Reading this list is one thing. Doing it well, at the quality AI actually rewards, and keeping up as the engines change every few weeks, is a real job. Most owners do not have the time, and that is fine. That is what we are here for.
At Boulder SEO Marketing, we do this work human-driven and AI-assisted. Our proprietary methodology, Micro SEO Strategies℠, is built to get local service businesses crawled, cited, and found, without the giant budgets the big players spend. If you would rather not spend your nights learning schema, crawler logs, and E-E-A-T, hand it to us.
The engine behind our work: microSEO
Here is the engine that powers everything we do. We built microSEO, an AI content marketing engine that creates content at scale, with the help of AI, that actually ranks in Google and gets cited in large language models.
How it works, in plain terms: we build a dedicated model for a business, its own trained brain that understands the brand, its customers, and its expertise. We use it to produce a cornerstone piece of content on a topic the business wants to own. Then we slice that content and distribute it through digital PR across the platforms that the large language models feed on, the places that shape what AI says about a brand. Human-driven, AI-assisted, at every step.
The microSEO platform is built for enterprise customers who need to produce a large volume of high-quality content at scale. If that is you, we should talk. And here is the part that matters if you run a local service business: microSEO is also the operating system we run every Boulder SEO Marketing engagement on. So even a single-location local business working with us gets the benefit of the same engine, without needing the enterprise platform.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, not just ranked in the traditional blue links. It builds on the same foundations as SEO, but the bar for clarity, structure, and trust is higher, because AI engines only surface sources they can crawl, understand, and associate with a credible author.
How do I get my local business to show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
You get cited by making your site easy for AI to crawl and easy to trust. Connect and sync your Google Business Profile, add local and review schema, publish fresh content written by a real, named expert, and build your author’s Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. The businesses that stack several of these together see the biggest jump in AI visibility.
Does AI search use my Google Business Profile?
Yes, and it is one of the most important local signals there is. In the study of 68 million AI crawler visits, connecting your Google Business Profile to your website was the single biggest lever on AI visibility. Keep your name, address, phone number, and hours consistent everywhere, respond to every review, and post regularly.
Why isn’t my business showing up in AI Overviews?
Usually one of three reasons. AI cannot crawl your site well, it cannot tie your site to a trusted source, or your content is thin or low quality. Low-quality AI-generated content is the most common culprit, and it actively pushes crawlers away. Fix the technical basics, build real author authority, and remove the pages that add nothing.
What makes AI crawl a website?
Fresh, well-structured, trustworthy content on a technically clean site that AI can read. The research found that features compound: sites with four or more proven signals, like a synced Google Business Profile, schema, reviews, and a real blog, were crawled at a 95.9 percent rate and pulled roughly 16 times more crawler visits than a baseline site.
How long does it take to show up in AI search?
It depends on your starting point and your authority. With a strong Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness profile, well-built content can rank and get cited within days. For most local service businesses starting from scratch, expect meaningful movement over a couple of months as the fixes compound.
Can I do this myself, or do I need an agency?
You can absolutely start yourself with the five must-haves in this guide. Doing all of it well, at the quality AI rewards, and keeping up as the engines change, is where it gets complex and time consuming. That is exactly the work we take off your plate at Boulder SEO Marketing.
Ready to get found in AI search?
If your competitors are getting cited by AI and you are not, every week that passes is leads walking to someone else. Let’s fix that.
Best,
Chris
