Optimizing for SGE: The Future of SEO | Friday SEO Tip

Hello everyone! Daniel Burns here, filling in for Chris Raulf, who’s somewhere up Mount Kilimanjaro right now (we’re hoping he reaches the summit!).

I wanted to tackle something that’s been extremely confusing in our industry—the difference between SEO, SGE, and GEO. Even those of us in the business get confused by all these acronyms. Watch the video above to learn more!

SEO: What We’ve Always Known

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the classic strategy we’ve used for decades—optimizing websites to rank in traditional search results with quality content, keywords, and links.

SGE: The Disruptor

SGE (Search Generative Experience) is Google’s AI-powered feature that provides conversational overviews at the top of search results. It synthesizes information from various websites to answer user questions directly.

Why is this disruptive? Users are getting answers without clicking through to websites, and organic results are being pushed lower on the page. This creates what we call “the great decoupling”—impressions go up, but clicks go down.

GEO: The New Strategy

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a modern strategy that focuses on getting your content cited in AI-generated summaries across all AI agents, not just Google.

4 Essential Strategies

Here’s how our Micro SEO: Human-driven, AI-assisted SEO and content marketing strategies tackle this:

  1. Build E-E-A-T – Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
  2. Structure for AI – Use Q&A formats and FAQ sections
  3. Implement Schema – Especially FAQ schema markup
  4. Think Multi-Modal – Include images, videos, and infographics

The goal is to make your content AI-friendly, positioning you as a cited source across all AI platforms.

Bottom line: E-E-A-T is becoming even more critical. Focus on building authority and structuring content properly to capitalize on the future trends.

Do you have a question about SGE optimization, AI tools for SEO, or would you like to be featured in a future Friday SEO Tip? I’d love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Daniel
