Focus on Quality over Quantity for Backlinks (and See My Favorite Platform in Action)

This week’s video covers two important topics: Google’s latest core algorithm update and building strong backlinks. Check it out if you’ve got about 7 minutes to spare.

Don’t have the time to watch right now? Here’s what you need to know.

First, Google is currently rolling out a core algorithm update, which began on August 15th and will take about a month to complete. This update focuses on recognizing smaller sites with exceptional content.

You might notice some volatility in your site’s rankings or traffic in the meantime. Don’t rush to fire your SEO agency if you see any disruptions, though; these should stabilize once Google addresses the kinds of issues that always accompany updates. Want to learn more? Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable has shared an update on the latest changes to Google Search.

Now onto building a strong backlink profile. In the video above, I talk about one of my favorite platforms for getting high-quality backlinks. If you search for “SEO price guide,” you’ll find that our guide, which we revamped a few months ago, ranks at the top. It took about five weeks to achieve this, which is a testament to the fact that Google prioritizes high-quality, relevant backlinks over sheer quantity.

Ready to take a deep dive on the backlink profile of this content? With help from SE Ranking (Sign up for a free trial here!), we can see there are 13 backlinks from about 10 domains. Now, if we head over to Google Search Console, we can see that despite competitors having more backlinks, our superior content helped us rank higher.

One notable backlink came from About.me, a platform I highly recommend. It’s a static page where you can publish information about resources and events. We used it to promote our upcoming online SEO training course, which will be on October 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. MDT. Here’s where the backlink strategy comes into play: At the bottom of the listing, we talk about the cost of SEO and link to the guide, which Google counted as a high-quality backlink.
