Getting Cited in AI Overviews: Welcome to the New Era of SEO | Friday SEO Tip

Today, I’m answering the most complex question we get at Boulder SEO Marketing: how to get cited in AI Overviews and generative AI tools. Check out the video above to see the exact process.

E-E-A-T is Everything

Before Google or any generative AI tool shows your content in their AI Overviews, they evaluate one critical factor: the E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) of the person publishing the content.

This is documented in Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines on page 24, step 3. Raters must consider E-E-A-T before content is shown at the top of search engines.

Real-World Example

When I search for “international AI and SEO expert,” I rank #1 organically and get cited in the AI Overview. How? I’ve been strategically building my E-E-A-T since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

If you search for my name, you’ll see my website, LinkedIn profile, Boulder SEO Marketing bio page, speaking engagement videos, and Featured.com publications. Google has a comprehensive understanding of who I am and what I’m known for.

Our E-E-A-T Building Process

We’re launching a new service specifically designed to help websites get cited in AI Overviews. Here’s how we do it:

Featured.com Management: My team visits Featured.com daily to identify opportunities where you can contribute expert insights to high-authority publications. We filter questions strategically to target ones that will boost your topical authority.

Virtual You Creation: We create a micro language model trained on your expertise, including transcripts from calls, speaking engagements, and content. This “Virtual You” can answer questions in your voice when opportunities arise, scaling your ability to contribute valuable insights.

Strategic Publication: Every contribution uses titles strategically designed to boost your rankings for target keywords. When I get published, I use “International AI and SEO Expert” as my title, which reinforces my authority for that exact search term.

Backlink Acquisition: Each published piece creates high-quality backlinks to your site and profiles, further boosting your E-E-A-T score.

The Results

We’ve been testing this approach for six months, and it’s working incredibly well. I regularly get published on high-authority sites, such as Marketer Magazine, with active links back to my LinkedIn profile and Boulder SEO Marketing website.

These publications don’t just create backlinks—they signal to Google and AI systems that I’m a trusted expert worth citing.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

This goes beyond traditional SEO. We call it Generative Engine Optimization—optimizing not just for Google, but for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI tools that people increasingly use for search.

Watch this clip from our recent AI and SEO webinar, where Daniel Burns walks through our comprehensive GEO methodology for getting content to rank in Google and appear in generative AI tools.

Why This Matters Now

AI Overviews are expanding rapidly. Soon, Google’s AI Mode will be the default for many searches. If you’re not building your E-E-A-T now, you’ll be invisible when that shift happens.

The fundamentals remain the same: create genuinely helpful content, build genuine expertise, and establish yourself as a trusted authority. However, the tactics for demonstrating authority are evolving rapidly.

Our New Service

We’re initially offering this E-E-A-T building service to our existing clients, and then expanding it to new customers. It’s not just about ranking—it’s about becoming the expert that AI systems trust and cite.
